Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of respiratory viruses that can cause mild to moderate illnesses ranging from the common cold to respiratory syndromes such as MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) and SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). Seven human coronaviruses (HCoVs) have been identified so far: HCoV-229E, HCoV-OC43, HCoV-NL63, HCoV-HKU1, the SARS-CoV, the MERS-CoV and the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV, also known as SARS-CoV-2). Unlike the highly pathogenic SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and 2019-nCoV, the four so-called common HCoVs generally cause mild upper respiratory tract disease and contribute 15%-30% of common cold cases in the adult man. However, they can sometimes cause serious and life-threatening lower respiratory tract infections, with symptoms such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia, in infants, the elderly, or immunocompromised patients. In addition to respiratory diseases, they can also cause enteric and neurological diseases.
HCoV-229E, -OC43, -NL63 and -HKU1 are spread globally and are transmitted through coughs and sneezes of infected people. The incubation period of HCoV-229E is approximately 2-5 days, followed by an illness lasting 2-18 days.
