Further Information
Bordetella is a genus of small Gram-negative coccobacilli highly difficult to grow in the laboratory.
B. pertussis, and more rarely B. parapertussis, causes pertussis, a disease characterized by the typical paroxysmal cough, and kill about 140,000 children each year.
Bordetella holmesii is thought to cause invasive infections (bacteremia, asplenia, meningitis, endocarditis, pericarditis, pneumonia, and arthritis) and pertussis-like symptoms. B. holmesii infection is often mistaken for B. pertussis infection because routine diagnostic tests for pertussis are not species specific.
