Adenoviruses belong to the family of Adenoviridae and the genus Mastadenovirus. They are non-enveloped viruses with an icosahedral capsid and a double stranded DNA genome. So far, at least 7 Adenovirus species (A to G) have been described, which comprise more than 52 serotypes. Adenoviruses cause respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases as well as diseases of the eye and are prevalently found among infants but also military personnel. In addition, Adenovirus infection is correlated with high morbidity and mortality of immunocompromised patients.
The monitoring of blood samples is a widely accepted practice for patients receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT), particularly in the pediatric sector. Usually, the virus can be detected in the blood between 2 and 3 weeks before the appearance of clinical manifestations. Such an early detection provides a large enough time window for medical intervention. Quantification via Real-Time PCR on the other hand is most useful for prognosis and follow-up, which largely depend on level and change of the viral load. In particular, an increase of the viral load is associated with a higher mortality rate.
