HHV 6 belongs to the β-type Herpesviridae family and is characterized by linear double-stranded DNA. On the basis of their antigenic properties, genetic heterogeneity and in vitro growth characteristics, the numerous HHV 6 strains were divided into two subgroups named A and B.
Strains of group A are more frequently isolated from patients with AIDS and lymphoproliferative diseases, while those of group B are found in infantile exanthematous manifestations.
The HHV 6B variant is in fact the etiological agent of Exanthema subitum or sixth disease. Primary infection occurs in children within the first two years of life, manifesting itself as a benign disease with high fever and skin rash that last for about 3-5 days and resolve spontaneously. Once the primary infection phase is over, the virus remains in the adult in latency in the mononuclear cells in the peripheral blood and in the lymphatic tissue (asymptomatic infection).
During adulthood, reactivation of the virus can occur, particularly in immunocompromised patients, AIDS patients, cancer patients and people undergoing transplantation (severe infection).
