The Parvovirus B19 (B19) is a single strand DNA virus and part of the genus Erythrovirus of the family Parvoviridae.
The main way of infection is by airborne respiratory droplets in closed environments. The virus infects host cells using a capsid protein, enters the cell nucleus and there replicates its genome. The preferred sites of infection are the bone marrow, the fetal liver or other sites of erythropoiesis.
Roughly 60% of the adult population is seropositive for Parvovirus B19.
Infection with Parvovirus B19 can cause several disorders, including erythema infectiosum (Fifth disease, mainly children), Aplastic crisis (mainly patients with a type of hemolytic anemia), hydrops fetalis (pregnant women) and artheropathies. Approximately 25% of infections remain symptomless.
